Slums of Mumbai

This is my report for Tracie Weisz and her Social Studies class for eighth grade.
I worked with Ariel Brooks.

Slums are squalid and overcrowded urban or district areas inhabited by very poor people. Before 1950 slums were predominantly found around where the mills were. Since then, instead of going away the slums have just spread. Slum dwellers take up more than 60% of Mumbai’s population, which is about seven million people. The program’s goal is to make Mumbai slum-free by 2015. Since Imperial Towers opened in March, 80 per cent of its 228 units have been sold. About one half of the Mumbai realty projects works are being focused on redeveloping 3480 hectares of land similar to slums. Asia's largest Slum Dharavi is located in Mumbai.
